Newton considers banning early morning sports practices

Sports teams practicing at the crack of dawn could face fines of up to $300 for bothering neighbors and aldermen if aldermen pass a new noise ordinance.

And if they don’t quiet down, the city could ban early-morning practices altogether.

At a meeting Feb. 9, an aldermanic committee approved the increased fines but held off on discussing a proposed amendment to the ordinance that would ban outdoor practices from athletic groups from holding practices, games, or drills before 7 a.m. The proposed amendment arose after Alderman Lenny Gentile and his neighbors experienced numerous problems with local college athletic teams holding early morning practices and drills in the Auburndale area.
